Special EditionsSuper Stock "SS" AMX The "Super Stock" (or "SS") AMXs modified by Hurst for NHRA Super Stock class drag racing are probably the best known special edition of the AMX. In the fall of 1969, 52 AMXs, all in Frost White with 390s and 4-speed transmissions, were pulled from the final assembly line and shipped to Hurst, where they received special equipment including dual-quads. Shirley Shahan's Drag-On-Lady was the most famous of these cars. [There is some debate about the exact number of SS AMXs; the "official" number is 52, all of which were in VIN sequence, but some sources report that a 53rd was made as insurance in case one of the 52 got damaged in transit, and other reports place the number at more than 80.] 1969 and '70 AMXs painted in one of the "Big Bad Colors" (blue, green and orange) are of special interest to many collectors. A limited number of Big Bad Green 1969 AMXs were sold with "500 Special" badges by the Southern California dealer association when the AMX was declared a pace car for the Riverside 500. |
