AMX/3An exotic, mid-engined successor to the AMX, known as the AMX/3, came fairly close to regular production in 1970. Seven prototypes were made, styled and engineered by AMC using the 390 cid AMC V-8, with bodies hand-built in Turin, Italy. The AMX/3 was a stunningly beautiful design, but the prototypes were all seriously flawed and the project, which involved shipping bodies from Italy to the U.S. for final assembly, proved to be too expensive for AMC to continue. The prototypes (only 6 of which were completed) are valuable for their historical and aesthetic interest, but not as serious sports cars. Jerry Beck has contributed a terrific history of the AMX/3, including some specifications and a "car-by-car where they are". |
