The AMC Mailing List
about the logo...

AMC fans: you've found your home on the Internet.

The AMC-List is for the discussion of American Motors cars, including Ramblers, AMC-built Renaults and Jeeps, and all related AMC products. New subscribers are encouraged (but not required) to introduce themselves to the list when they join -- just let us know what AMC cars you've owned, what your specific interests are, things like that.

How to Subscribe

Go to www.amc-list.com and follow the link for subscribing. Shortly after submitting the form you will receive an e-mail (sent to the subscribed address). This e-mail will have a link that must be clicked to confirm your intention to subscribe to the AMC-List.

Volume on the AMC-List can be high, though on average there are only 10-30 messages daily. The default message format for new users is DIGEST MODE. This collects individual messages into a single mail message containing 8-12 of the individual messages. A digest is sent once the 40K limit is reached, or daily if 40K is not reached. 1-3 digests will normally be received instead of 10-30 individual mail messages. The messages in the digest have all sender information and each is easily identified. To reply send an e-mail message to mail@amc-list.com. Don't forget to cut and paste (or type in)  the subject into the new mail and any part of the digest you wish to quote. Please don't simply reply and return the entire digest! At least cut out the unnecessary parts. Alternately, come back to the AMX-Files website and reply to the message. All messages in the digest should also appear on the site, though sometimes this does not occur or takes more time.

Changing your list options and Unsubscribing

Got to www.amc-list.com to change your list options, such as receiving your mail as individual messages instead of digests, or to unsubscribe from the list. Changing settings requires a password, but don't worry if you don't know yours! Once you get to the Member Options Login page type your e-mail address (the one you subscribed with -- that you must remember!) in the space provided then scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the "remind" button. Your password will be sent to the e-mail account you subscribed with within 30 minutes. It usually gets there faster, but the length of time depends on many things -- it could take as long as an hour.

Once you have your password go back to the Member Options Login page (click "Change your settings" on www.amc-list.com) and type in your e-mail address and password. Click the "login" button to make changes, "unsubscribe" button to leave the list. The system will permanently delete your e-mail address from the subscriber database.

Changes are made using a simple checklist page. Scroll down the page and read all options. While you're there, you may want to change your password to something you remember just for convenience. The "remind" button is always there! You can also turn on a monthly password reminder message. If you do not understand what an option does, it's best to leave it at the default. Contact and administrator if you have any problems or questions.

AMC-List Archives ONLINE

You can read the AMC-List on the web and search for keywords in recent posts. Only subscribers can post messages, but anyone can read. Posts and replies can also be made with the easy to use web posting interface.

If there are problems with the web site, the archives can also be viewed at www.amc-list.com. The latest message will be at the BOTTOM of the list when viewed by date. Note that replies must be made through e-mail when viewing from www.amc-list.com, there is no post or reply interface on that site. Reply by sending an e-mail to mail@amc-list.com and cutting and pasting the subject and relevant information from archived messages.

Note to AOL users and others with limited mailbox space: if you change your mail delivery status to "Disabled" you won't get mail from the list (not even digests), but you can still post, and you can read the list on the web.

AMC-List Roster

AMC-List members and all other AMC enthusiasts on the Internet can tell the world about themselves and their great AMC cars in the Roster, a searchable online database. The roster IS NOT linked to the AMC-List database, but is independent of it. AMC-List members (and all who read the list on-line, even if they don't post) are encouraged to add their info to the Roster. Don't forget to come back and update when your information changes!

AMC-List Rules

Subscribers who violate these policies will receive one warning. The second infraction will result in individual moderation for a minimum of 30 days. This means that all posts made by the offending member will have to be reviewed by an administrator before being released to the public. If a member must be moderated a second time in a one year period their membership will be revoked. They may reapply for membership in six months, but will be removed if further infractions occur. If you have to be asked to keep your cool every month or so, and tend to ignore polite reminders, don't expect to be allowed back on the list. An e-mail from a moderator concerning a subject or a post on the list IS NOT considered a warning. Warnings will be CLEARLY STATED as such and in a private e-mail to the individual concerned, not publicly on the list. All decisions by the moderators are final. Remember, access to the list is not a right, it's a privilege. Abuse that privilege on a regular basis and it will be taken away. The moderators maintain this list as a service to all AMC enthusiasts at their own expense. All decisions made by the moderators are final.
  1. The topic of the list is AMC vehicles, loosely defined as vehicles designed, engineered, manufactured, and/or sold by the American Motors Corporation. General, non-AMC-specific technical information is also permitted if it is of value to people working on AMC vehicles.
  2. All messages must include the author's name OR e-mail in the text of the message or in the header. Fortunately the list is small and on a very secure server -- the possibility of someone harvesting e-mails is remote. Most reports of SPAM suspecting the list as a source are actually from members computers infected with a virus or spy-ware that is sending replies to the list. These will be caught by the server's safeguards.

  3. When replying to list mail, do not send the reply to the list unless it will be of interest to the list in general. Reply to the individual author if your message is not of general interest. This is why an e-mail address is included with messages. In particular if you want to purchase an item for sale that has been posted to the list, please reply to the individual posting the item - not the entire list. It is important to check the address in your reply since it will go to the entire list by default in most cases.
  4. The "Subject" line should reflect the content of the message. If you change the subject of a thread, change the "Subject" line.
  5. In replies, quote as much of the original message as necessary to establish the context. Edit out unnecessary material.
  6. **Abusive or insulting messages are absolutely not allowed. All list members, and their vehicles, must be treated with respect.**
  7. Advertising is permitted on the list, within the following guidelines:
    • No excessive amount of ads. If users complain advertiser will be notified.
    • No more than 100 lines of text (about 5K) per ad
    • Ads must be specifically geared toward AMC enthusiasts.
    • MUST include an e-mail or phone number
    • Once a request for or offer of merchandise has been posted to the list, all subsequent correspondence concerning a transaction must be conducted off the list.
    • Do not repeat ads more than once four times -- once a week for a month is about right, and sometimes necessary. Remember, everyone doesn't read the list daily nor get the digest -- many readers just visit the website occasionally.

If you are selling a vehicle, we suggest that you use the following format to advertise it. Simply cut and paste this template into an e-mail to the list and change the information as applicable. This will help prevent ten replies all asking about a detail you forgot to include, and it will also help you sell your vehicle faster.

             MODEL: Rambler Ambassador
              YEAR: 1964
        BODY STYLE: 990-H 2-door hardtop
            ENGINE: 327 4-barrel
      TRANSMISSION: Automatic
COLOR: yellow with black top, black interior
           MILEAGE: 34,000 original miles
LOCATION: Austin, TX (PLEASE DO NOT FORGET THIS!)
    E-MAIL ADDRESS: wish.it.was.mine@mail.utexas.edu
ASKING PRICE: $4,500 O.B.O. (optional but recommended)
PHONE NUMBER: (512)-123-4567 (optional; must include area code)
Feel free to also describe any options, how the car runs, handles, any rust problems, and so forth. The important point to make is that the above template will help answer a lot of common questions that people frequently don't address in their ads.

  8. If mail to a subscriber is "bounced" back to the list administrator due to a full mailbox or technical error on the subscriber's system, the system will automatically unsubscribe the member from the list in order to reduce unnecessary load on the AMC-List system. Subscribers should unsubscribe or set their Mail Delivery to "disable" to avoid such problems when they are unable to check their mail for a length of time. When "disabled" no mail will be sent, but a member can still post and read the List on the web site.

TIP: Remember, the web site and List are TWO DIFFERENT ENTITIES! The AMX Files site receives mail just like any member, then mirrors the posts to the site for public view. If mail service gets interrupted, usually due to the regular Internet DNS shuffle, it may take a few days to get the service straightened out, especially if it fails on or just before a weekend. This will happen 2-3 times a year. Jim will generally post "missing" days to the site after the problem is fixed. If you're concerned about missing posts, get the list in Digest mode. This will consolidate all messages into 1-4 mails per day and send them to your mail box instead of 10-50 individual mails filling your box. Digests files aren't as big as all the individual mail messages, not much over 40K. Digest mode is now the default when you sign up on the list.

About the Logo:
The AMC-List logo was adapted from a design suggested by John Rosa on the AMC-List as a windshield sign for AMC-List members to display at the Kenosha meet in 1998. John adapted the logo from another member's idea, adding the "Big Bad" colors to make it stand out in a meet full of red, white and blue.
